This photo was taken a few weeks back on a Saturday, at the Oranjezicht City Farm in Cape Town, when I went there to compost my food waste.

Food Waste Is A Bigger Contributor To Methane Gas Than Dairy

Did you know? Food waste ending up in landfill is a bigger contributor to methane gas than rearing cows for meat and dairy.

Methane gas that is released into the atmosphere before it is burned is harmful to the environment because it is able to trap heat in the atmosphere and as such, contributes to climate change.

I learnt this recently from Dr. Mark Hyman whilst he was on the Jay Shetty podcast and I highly recommend listening to it for exceptional insight into why food is addictive, how food corporations are dangerously hijacking our brains and lobbying government to make dangerous health decisions on food, as well as what you the individual can do about it.

40% of our food is wasted into landfill. This is one of the biggest drivers of climate change. It’s a bigger contributor of methane than cows! It’s all the vegetables you are throwing in the landfill!

Vote For Change With Your Money

Given that 40% of the food we eat is wasted according to Dr Mark Hyman and ends up in landfill – I think we should all start looking into composting more in our local communities and asking our local government representatives to also do more to make it easier and more accessible.

As it is our job to speak up and ask for what we want especially when we know better. We can’t rely on governments to get there without us.

We must also never forget we are agents of change, and that every single purchase we make impacts what we are given by food companies. So we vote daily for change with our money! Make your ‘vote’ count!
