free range turkey mince balls

This is the perfect recipe for you to make with your kids, or just for you if you don’t have any. I say this because I believe it is really important to teach kids how food is made, and that the ingredients to make a recipe do not just fall from the sky and into our supermarkets.

As a recent survey carried out in the UK showed that almost one third of primary school pupils thought that cheese was made from plants and one quarter thought that fish fingers came from chicken or pigs!

What on earth is being taught in our UK schools is what I want to know? I think its more a case of what isn’t being taught though personally, and one thing I know for sure is that not enough correct nutrition is being taught and not enough healthy cooking classes are being offered. I remember when I was at school only learning about baking cakes!

No wonder I had to teach myself to cook (when I finally became interested in cooking as the mother would have taught me had I have only asked), as all I was shown how to make was cakes which really were for special occasions = useless life skill right there!

Anyways, enough of me putting the UK education system to rights – this recipe is very easy to make and it will make you feel really proud of the end tasty results!

*** You Will Need ***

serves 3-4 people depending on how hungry they are and what else is being served as this recipe should yield 12-15 minceballs

  • 500g of free range and/or organic turkey mince meat *I could only find free range in Tesco’s
  • 1 red organic onion
  • 1 tablespoon of organic dried paprika powder
  • 1/2 cup of organic fresh coriander (or cilantro)
  • 1/2 cup organic 100% brown rice flour
  • salt, pinch
  • pepper, pinch
  • 1 egg, beaten

*** How To Make ***

  1. Start by preheating your oven to 200 degrees centigrade.
  2. Then finely chop you red onion and coriander and add to a large bowl.
  3. In the same bowl, mix in with the above ingredients the salt, pepper, paprika and rice flour.
  4. Next add your fresh turkey mince meat into the same bowl and with clean hands, thoroughly mix all the ingredients together. You will need to imagine you are ‘making bread’ with your movements and sort of knead, stretch and roll to ensure all the mince is evenly covered with the other ingredients. This will help you get an even balanced flavour.
  5. Next, make 1 inch by 1 inch round balls out of the mixture, dip in the egg when done (ensure to coat all over and the balls don’t need to be dripping with egg!), and then place on a greased baking tray or  baking tray lined with baking paper.
  6. Cook for 15-20 minutes until the balls have gone golden in parts.

If you wish to make turkey burgers, instead of  making balls, take more mixture, roll into a ball then flatten in the shape of a burger.
