I’ll say it then if no one else will – it’s HARD to eat healthy all the time and to meet your daily needs of fresh fruit and vegetables!

So Many Nutrients To Eat Daily – How?!

As nutritional therapists, we are always asking our clients to increase their intake of plant-based foods and fibre to try to ideally consume around 9-12 portions a day of a variety of rainbow coloured foods so you get all the important phytonutrients, vitamins, minerals ON TOP of the macronutrients (think proteins, carbohydrates and fats). But are we helping you to achieve that adequately in the modern-day world that is fast-paced and shows no sign of giving up?!

ENTER: smoothies!!

Smoothies Are Not A Fad

No – this is not a fad I’m trying to regurgitate! Investing in a decent blender (I use the Omni Blend) will also make your smoothies taste so much better than the cheapest of cheap blenders (sorry!).

But to make this a sustainable habit they have to at least taste good! Especially when you are adding some of the “interesting” ingredients I’d love you to try when making my favourite smoothie recipe (swipe left for the ingredients) which I refer to as the:

Creamy & Delicious Blood Sugar Stabilising Smoothie Recipe

  • 1 cup coconut milk (or almond)
  • 1/2 cup tinned chickpeas
  • 1/4 tsp coconut oil
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon
  • 3 tsp nut butter
  • 1/4 cup chopped cauliflower
  • 1/2 cup frozen blueberries
  • 1 chopped banana

Add all the ingredients into the blender, going from lightest to heaviest, and blend for 2-3 months.

Smoothie Making Tips

  • Try adding in ingredients you don’t usually eat or don’t eat a lot to add a variety of nutrients to your diet,
  • Add a little banana and/or maple syrup to help the smoothies become more palatable (especially when coming off high in sugar foods and drinks)
  • Choose ingredients that are blood sugar friendly which means they are mood friendly,
  • Only 10% of your daily nutritional needs come from fruit therefore only a little fruit is needed

It can be hard to eat enough healthy food, especially plant-based fresh food, which is where a smoothie a day can really help!
