September may have come and gone, which is Polycystic Awareness Month but it is still hugely important to discuss what PCOS is, especially as it plagues many womxn. It is good to also note that PCOS is not the same as PCO (Polycystic Ovaries). PCOS is a metabolic condition that may or may not come with having PCO.

PCOS is Very Common

1 in 10 womxn have the syndrome, yet a whopping 50% of womxn with it go undiagnosed. Research tells us that 50% of womxn with PCOS will develop prediabetes or diabetes before age 40, and womxn with PCOS have a 3 times increased risk for developing endometrial cancer.

Symptoms of PCOS can include:

  • excess facial and body hair
  • irregular periods
  • severe acne
  • small cysts in ovaries
  • insulin resistance
  • anxiety and depression
  • infertility
  • weight gain
  • male pattern hair loss
