So, I had a cake, 2 tiny (and I am not exaggerating and trying to make it sound better than it was) sugary cakes – at a friends engagement party last night.
No longer than 15 minutes after, I suddenly got a headache and felt really sick. Luckily I was in the car at this point as we had just left. But then once we arrived home, and I got out the car I felt like I had a hangover…
This was not the first time I have had this effect from food. So I understood very well what it was.
Hangover effect from food – What is this?
Well when you have an allergy or intolerance to food and certain components (which for me here was mostly the gluten and wheat) the liver will show it is not able to to break down the offending food or component, by making you feel sick and like you are under the influence, and sometimes tired too. The same happens when you have alcohol. Your body can not handle alcohol, and no I don’t care how many beers you say you ‘can’ handle!.. There are no nutritional benefits of alcohol so I do not understand why we would want to put something in our body that actually causes a big loss of precious nutrients needed for survival.
My body at present cannot handle these items at the best of times although sometimes I can have a little without much effect. But what is also interesting is that my body is getting ready for my menstruation to happen and the liver plays a big part here, and is often overlooked. So showing my body was already overworked getting ready for this clear out of toxins that has accumulated over the month (my period) these food items just pushed it too its limit resulting in an immediate effect.
What is the job of the liver?
Once the food has been chewed, swallowed and has gone out of the stomach – it then goes to the liver. It is here the liver turns the ‘unrecognisable’ and alien food products into acceptable ones. (Not everything is liked at first by the body – so it takes a lot of reserves to break it down, the more toxic or processed a food item or its ingredients are the harder the liver has to work.)
The liver is a major organ involved in daily detoxification and needs daily care through a gentle diet to keep it functioning well. Alcohol being drunk, for example, on a regular basis puts severe strain on the liver to deal with, and can cause severe liver damage the more that is drunk and the longer it is drunk regularly. Which is why it can take many years to fully repair the liver, as it took many years of abuse to get damaged in the first place.
Protein synthesis, plasma protein synthesis, metabolism, glycogen storage, decomposition of red blood cells, and hormone production are just some of the other jobs the liver plays a part in.
So for your body to be working well, it needs the liver to be well. Much like every other organ needs to be well too for the body to work in true harmony. As the body does not work in separate parts, like conventional thinking and medicine would often make us believe.
If you have felt ‘hungover’ from food and ever wondered why as you did not have a drop of alcohol, I would suggest your liver needs some TLC!

Organic beetroot juice is a powerful liver cleanser.
