No one likes to pay more than they need to for their food, and I know many people still question the need to pay more for organic food. Whereas for me, organic food is an integral part of my natural medicine regime and so I am more than happy to pay more for organic food because all the chemicals sprayed onto crops I firmly believe will cause you grave problems to health somewhere down the line.
And I am not willing to take that chance and be part of the big safety experiment. Because long term safety data is missing for the effects to health conventionally grown food crops can cause.
So, in a bid to help to encourage more people to make the switch to organic food, or at least to make the switch with some of their weekly staples, I have put together a list of where to shop to pay less for certain foods. All of the organic food staples on this list are also certified organic, meaning they really are organic and you are not being duped!
1. Kallo Organic Wholegrain Breakfast Puffs 225g (Sugar Free, Dairy Free & Gluten Free)
Best Price: £1.77 Morrisons
Worst Price: £2.99 Holland & Barratt
Amy say’s… These are a staple in my house, and my son regularly has them for breakfast. They work well topped with creamy almond milk, and if you are feeling fancy, with a little crushed coconut and nut mix added to it.
2. Organic Carrots
Best Price: 79p Aldi 750g
Worst Price: £1.00 Waitrose 650g
Amy say’s… I prefer to use carrots grated into homemade gluten free muffins, chopped and dipped in houmous, and also chopped up into small cubes and covered with coconut oil, coconut aminos and yeast flakes (for a ‘fake’ cheesy twist).
3. Organic Bananas
Best Price: Aldi £1.09 for 1kg and are also fairly traded
Worst Price: £1.92 for 6 Waitrose
Amy says… My family eat a ridiculous amount of bananas each week, as we like to top our cereal with one each, mash up the ripe ones and use them to sweeten any desserts we feel like making, and we freeze them to turn them into ice-cream.
4. Organic Eggs (6 in a box)
Best Price: £1.39 Aldi (are also RSPCA assured)
Worst Price: £2.43 Waitrose
Amy say’s… I eat eggs most days for breakfast, scrambled or boiled, as they provide me with stable energy to help me handle a busy day.
5. Brown Organic Rice (500g)
Best Price: £1.31 Morrisons
Worst Price: £2.40 Planet Organic
Amy say’s… I love to mix rice into salads, home made wraps, and enjoy it on its own sometimes as I love the clean nutty flavour.
6. Mamia 100% Organic Apples, Carrots & Parsnips Baby Food Pouch
Best Price: £0.60p Aldi
Worst Price: £1.10 Tesco’s for the Ella’s Kitchen brand in the same flavour
Amy say’s… These make perfect on the go snacks for my two year old son, and as a top up on his daily veg quota!
7. Organic, Cold Pressed, Raw Coconut Oil 300ml
Best Price: £2.99 Aldi (this started off as a special buy item, but now seems to be part of their permanent range)
Worst Price: £9.99 Lucy Bee
Amy say’s… I do not have any dairy in my diet at all, and so use coconut oil in place of butter for everything when cooking. I also prefer it to olive oil which isn’t safe to be heated to high temperatures, unlike coconut oil which is. And due to it’s ability to convert into energy, I also enjoy a teaspoon of coconut oil on it’s own if I am hungry and in a rush to get out the house and do not have any healthy snacks on hand.
Did this post inspire you to add a new organic food item into your weekly shop?
If so, you are be making a huge difference to not only your health, and your family’s health, but the health of other species we share this planet with. As according to Rob Sexton, Chief Executive of Soil Association Certification, even if just 12 families make the small change to swap their bread to organic, an area of organic land a quarter of the size of the Wembley Stadium football pitch would be a haven for wildlife.
