Perhaps it is the name that makes it sound too complex and involved for already busy enough lifestyles. But I am here to share a review of a new raw food book, Food Heroes by Gabriela Lerner, that will demonstrate how tasty raw food can be, and at the same time, allow you to make huge benefits to health from simply including a couple of raw recipes a week to you and your families meal plan every week.

Healthy Rocky Road Cake Recipe – Have You Ever?!

Raw food, is simply food that has not been heated above 42 degrees, is minimally processed, and so is as natural as and nutritious as possible. The true beauty of raw food is that you can still enjoy the tastes of your favourite foods, lets say the regular rocky road cake, but without causing problems to your health from all the funky additives and refined white table sugar added. This is beautifully demonstrated below with Gabriela’s raw makeover of the rocky road cake, which for me turned out just as decadent and delicious as what I now see as store bought ‘imposters’.

Raw Food – Food That Loves You Back

I jumped at the opportunity to review Gabriela Lerner’s first recipe book Food Heroes, because we are the on the same page when it comes to seeing food as heroes. As without good quality food where would our health be? For me personally, I know without doubt, healthy clean food is my absolute best medicine. And without delivering healthy nutritious meals to my body each and every day, I know I wouldn’t have gone from someone living with a long list of health complaints to someone who has resolved these issues plus with stacks more energy to boot!

And as I read through Gabriela’s about page, I see she too has gone through her own series of health problems, to which switching to a raw food diet has helped her keep her fibromyalgia at bay, pesky hormones balanced and energy levels high. So if this doesn’t tempt you to dabble with a little raw food creation each week I don’t know what will!

There are a further 76 recipes in the Food Heroes raw recipe book, and I just know within these beautiful pages are at least a handful everyone, no matter their dietary choices, will get to love. As all are gluten, dairy free and refined sugar free. And even though no animal protein is found within any recipes either, this as you will see works well as the meals are rich in natural complete proteins meaning you will find it easy to become full if you choose to make one as a dinner recipe but many are also left with the option to serve the dishes as a side next to animal protein at dinner time instead.

Live On The Raw Side Of Life (Even If Only Sometimes!)

I run out of ideas for family meals often, and so I regularly find myself flipping through a huge stack of recipe books in my kitchen for inspiration. But when doing so, I find myself sometimes craving something not cooked to death and feel my family needs more raw food based meals which is where Food Heroes recipe book really helped lend a nutritious hand.

For instance I found I could make a whole meal out of one single recipe, like the chia seed pizza crust recipe. It became super filling for me and my family when it was was topped with avo, homemade dairy free nut cheese (recipe also in Gabriela’s book see pictured below spreaded on my favourite organic gluten free bread) and a little roughly scattered spinach and sliced tomatoes (or whatever you feel like / have fresh in your fridge that you think will work).

raw macadamia nut cheese spreaded on breadBut I was also able to make a regular cooked meal, and then serve it alongside the raw nut roast recipe for example, or the jeweled broccoli salad recipe (see pictured below).

jewelled broccoli salad by gabriela lerner raw food heroesSo, even if you only incorporate a few raw meals into your diet every week this is going to massively help boost your health from all the nutrition that is still left locked inside the foods used in the recipes from all the ‘undercooking’ if you like. And the beauty about the Food Heroes raw recipe book is that it gives you the option to change some of the ingredients to what you would prefer and make notes of what worked and what didn’t on the same page as you go ‘uncooking’ along.

Easy To Find Ingredients To Help You Create Something New Tonight

My favourite take home message from the Food Heroes book is that it teaches you to achieve excellent nutritious meals (and decadent desserts) out of real whole foods in all of the recipes that all of us have easy access to and do not require you to purchase expensive foods that are often labelled ‘super foods’. These super foods often come with a hefty price tag, but the ingredients in Gabriela’s book do not. Yet the recipes still provide deliciously filling meals, snacks and desserts out of purely vegetarian ingredients. Recipes you would perhaps never have thought of could be made with such basic ingredients!

Try Uncooking Your Food Once in a While

The recipes in this book are bursting with foods that many people fail on a daily basis to eat enough of and then wonder why they don’t feel so great.

  • Give this book a go, even if it is to help you find new interesting ways to achieve your much needed five portions of vegetables a day.
  • Especially give this book a go, if you are a staunch meat eater who isn’t a fan of veg.
  • Let this book pleasantly surprise you and your taste buds! (And even your childrens!)

As it is vital we teach the next generation that healthy food can still be delicious, and making it yourself is the only way to know your health isn’t being unknowingly compromised.

Gabriela Lerner has really put together her Food Heroes raw recipe food book extremely well as it gives you options for keeping everything you currently consume, but overhauled with a healthier nutritarian viewpoint. You can dabble with her refreshing smoothie recipes a few times a week, mix things up by including buckwheat into your breakfast regime, learn to make healthy yet filling salads, and go bananas over the choice of healthy snacks and dessert recipes on offer!
